The Buffalo nickel, also known as the Indian Head nickel, stands out as one of the most distinctive and widely recognized coins ever produced by the U.S. Mint. Its unique design, crafted by sculptor James Earl Fraser, was minted from 1913 to 1938, leaving a lasting impression on numismatics enthusiasts and collectors.
In 1911, a significant decision was made to replace Charles E. Barber’s Liberty Head design for the nickel. This led to the commissioning of James Earl Fraser, who impressed the Taft administration officials with his work. Despite a delay caused by an objection from the Hobbs Manufacturing Company, the designs were approved in 1912. Finally, in February 1913, Treasury Secretary Franklin MacVeagh decided to issue the coins, marking a pivotal moment in the history of the Buffalo nickel.
