1879 Schoolgirl Dollar Pattern Tribute – 2 Troy Ounces of .999 Fine Silver
One of America’s most admired pattern designs returns in a substantial two-ounce silver tribute. George T. Morgan’s youthful Liberty portrait and spirited eagle give the 1879 Schoolgirl Dollar a character all its own, offering a fascinating glimpse of a design that never entered everyday circulation.
A Different Vision of Liberty
Morgan’s familiar silver dollar began production in 1878, but his work on alternative designs continued. The Schoolgirl pattern followed in 1879 and was struck in small numbers. Its youthful portrait inspired the nickname by which collectors know it today. Patterns like this preserve an intriguing chapter of American coinage: artistic possibilities that survived as experimental pieces rather than circulating money.
The original silver pattern is cataloged as Judd-1608. This modern tribute celebrates that historic design in .999 fine silver, with its two-ounce weight identified on the reverse. It is a contemporary bullion round, distinct from the rare nineteenth-century pattern.
Obverse Design
Liberty faces left within a border of stars and the divided inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM, with 1879 below. The youthful profile provides a softer counterpoint to the bold eagle on the opposite side. The surrounding inscriptions and stars retain the formal arrangement of the historic inspiration.
Reverse Design
A defiant eagle faces left, poised as though ready to take flight above a rectangular perch bearing IN GOD WE TRUST. An olive sprig occupies the left field, while three arrows appear at right. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWO OUNCES frame the design, with the hallmark and mint mark completing the modern tribute.
