1878 CC Morgan Dollar Tribute – 2 oz Silver Round

The opening year of the Morgan dollar meets the famous Carson City mint mark in this limited-mintage Intaglio Mint tribute. The first release in the Carson City Dollar Tribute Series recreates Liberty’s profile and the spread-winged eagle in two troy ounces of .999 fine silver. Its 39mm diameter and substantial thickness give a familiar American coin design a distinctly modern silver-round format.

Carson City and the Silver Boom

Congress established the Carson City Mint in 1863 to serve the coinage needs created by Nevada’s Comstock Lode. Coin production began in 1870, so the authorization date should not be confused with the start of minting. The facility’s “CC” mark became a lasting connection between United States coinage and the mining communities of the American West.

Carson City Mint building

George T. Morgan’s dollar entered production in 1878. The historic series was struck from 1878 through 1904 and again in 1921, pairing a portrait of Liberty with an eagle holding an olive branch and arrows. This tribute celebrates the first year of that design and its Carson City association, while the reverse’s “TWO TROY OZ.” inscription identifies the modern round’s weight. It is not an original 1878 dollar or a coin manufactured at the historic Carson City Mint.

Obverse Design

Liberty faces left with flowing hair, a cap and a band inscribed “LIBERTY.” Botanical ornament accompanies the portrait, with “E PLURIBUS UNUM” above and the date 1878 below. Thirteen stars surround the lower portion of the design, and denticles form a finely patterned border.

Reverse Design

An eagle spreads its wings while holding an olive branch and three arrows. “IN GOD WE TRUST” appears above, surrounded by “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWO TROY OZ.” The “CC” tribute mark sits near the bottom, recalling the historic mint that inspired the series.
