The Amazonian designs belong to the remarkable pattern coinage of 1872. William Barber used the seated Liberty composition for proposed quarters, half dollars, and silver dollars. These pieces offer a glimpse of designs that collectors can study alongside the coins that actually entered everyday circulation.

A pattern is a trial or proposed coin design, rather than an ordinary circulation issue. Design Details

Obverse: Liberty is seated facing left, her right hand touching the head of an eagle with outstretched wings and a sword in her left hand. Thirteen stars occupy the upper field, with the date below. The close placement of Liberty and the eagle makes them read as a single, forceful composition.

Reverse: An eagle echoes the obverse bird in a reversed arrangement, clasping arrows and holding a shield. A banner across the shield reads “IN GOD WE TRUST.” “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” follows the upper circumference, while the hallmark and “2 TROY OUNCES” identify the modern silver tribute below.
