1836 G$1 J-67 Liberty Cap Tribute – 2 Troy Ounce Silver Round
A radiant Liberty cap takes center stage in this tribute to the 1836 J-67 gold-dollar pattern. The original proposal used a compact symbol of liberty in place of a full portrait; Intaglio Mint brings that striking arrangement to a 2 troy ounce .999 fine silver round, giving its rays and curved palm frond room to stand out.
A Gold Dollar Before Its Time
The J-67 pattern explored a denomination that would not join regular United States coinage until 1849. Dated 1836, it belongs to the experimental history of the gold dollar, when proposed designs allowed an idea to be examined in metal before it became a circulating coin.
The Smithsonian preserves an example of the 1836 pattern in gold, describing the Liberty cap surrounded by sun-like rays. That simple central image is what makes the design so distinctive. The cap is presented almost as a source of light, with the radiating lines creating a sense of energy across the field.
Two Sides of a Balanced Design
The reverse offers a quieter contrast. A palm frond coils around the central inscription, replacing the straight rays of the obverse with an enclosing curve. On this modern tribute, “2 Oz.” takes the place of the original “1 D.” denomination. The change identifies the silver weight while retaining the structure that gives the historic design its character.
This is a silver interpretation of a gold-coin proposal, part of Intaglio Mint’s U.S. Pattern and Trial Tributes. It invites collectors to look beyond the designs that reached circulation and appreciate the alternatives preserved in America’s pattern coinage.
