$10 Indian Tribute – 2 oz Silver Medal
A celebrated gold-coin design finds a new expression in silver. Intaglio Mint’s $10 Indian Tribute brings Saint-Gaudens’ feathered Liberty and standing eagle to a 39mm art medal containing 2 troy ounces of .999 fine silver. Domed dies give the composition a sculptural presence, while the Brilliant Uncirculated finish emphasizes its fine detail.
The Eagle’s Changing Identity
Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed the historic Indian Head eagle introduced in 1907. Its familiar name can be misleading: the obverse depicts Liberty wearing a Native American headdress, rather than a portrait of a particular Native American person. The sweeping feathers offered a dramatic departure from earlier images of Liberty.
The reverse also records a change in American coinage. The new eagle initially appeared without “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Congress approved restoration of the motto in May 1908, and it returned to the design. This tribute pairs the motto-bearing eagle with the depicted 1910 date, preserving the visual character of the later historic issue.
Obverse Design
Liberty faces left beneath thirteen stars. Her headdress band bears “LIBERTY,” and the date 1910 appears below. Flowing hair and layered feathers surround the calm profile, creating a balance between intricate texture and open space.
Reverse Design
A standing eagle faces left on a bundle of arrows and an olive branch. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arcs above, with “E PLURIBUS UNUM” to the right and “IN GOD WE TRUST” to the left. The hallmark and “TWO TROY OUNCES” distinguish this modern silver medal from the original $10 gold coin.
