$10 Indian Tribute – 2 oz Fine Gold Medal
Augustus Saint-Gaudens gave American gold coinage a striking new face with his Indian Head eagle. Intaglio Mint honors that design in a 2 troy ounce, .9999 fine gold art medal, struck with domed dies on a 39mm canvas. Liberty’s feathered headdress and the upright eagle bring the original composition into sharp focus.
Liberty in a New Headdress
Introduced in 1907, the historic $10 eagle joined Saint-Gaudens’ $20 double eagle in the transformation of American gold coin design. Despite the familiar “Indian Head” name, this portrait represents Liberty wearing a Native American headdress. The thirteen stars above her recall the original states.
One small inscription tells another chapter of the design’s history. The new eagle and double eagle initially omitted the national motto. Congress passed a law restoring it in May 1908, and “IN GOD WE TRUST” returned to the designs. This tribute includes the motto beside the standing eagle, connecting its reverse to that later form of the historic coin.
Obverse Design
Liberty faces left beneath a sweeping feathered headdress. “LIBERTY” appears on its band, thirteen stars arc overhead, and the depicted date 1910 sits below the portrait. The broad feathers and flowing hair balance the quiet profile at the center.
Reverse Design
A left-facing eagle stands on a bundle of arrows with an olive branch. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” follows the upper rim, while “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” flank the bird. The hallmark and “TWO TROY OUNCES” identify this modern gold tribute rather than a circulating $10 coin.
