Bonnie and Clyde – 2 oz Silver Round – Public Enemy #1
Two faces, a getaway car, and a story that became inseparable from Depression-era America. This Intaglio Mint release in the Public Enemy #1 series depicts Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow in 2 troy ounces of .999 fine silver. Its paired scenes recall both the couple’s public image and the violent end of their flight from the law.
The Story Behind the Headlines
Bonnie and Clyde met in Texas in 1930. Their later travels with the Barrow gang brought robberies, kidnappings, and killings across several states. Popular retellings often emphasize romance, but the historical record includes victims and communities left behind by that violence.
A surprisingly ordinary object helped draw federal investigators into the case: a prescription bottle found in a stolen car. Agents traced it to a Texas drugstore and a prescription for Clyde’s aunt. Evidence that a stolen automobile had crossed state lines led to a federal warrant in May 1933, giving the Bureau of Investigation a basis to pursue the pair.
The manhunt ended on May 23, 1934, when Texas and Louisiana officers ambushed Bonnie and Clyde near Sailes, Louisiana. Both died in the automobile that has become one of the most recognizable images associated with their story.
Obverse Design
The couple poses together beside a period automobile beneath the arcing “PUBLIC ENEMY #1” title. Their names appear in script on either side, giving the scene the character of a photograph translated into silver relief.
Reverse Design
The reverse depicts the Ford V8 associated with their final journey. Paired with the portrait scene, the automobile turns the round into a compact account of notoriety, pursuit, and consequence.
