Intaglio Mint proudly presents Namahage, part of the Yokai: Legends of Japan Series, an exploration of the mysterious spirits, supernatural beings, and legendary figures that have inhabited Japanese folklore and tradition for centuries.
Originating on the Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture, Namahage are fearsome masked figures traditionally depicted with wild hair, horns, frightening faces, and imposing costumes. During an annual New Year’s ritual, participants dressed as Namahage visit homes throughout local communities, dramatically searching for those who have been lazy, disobedient, or neglectful of their responsibilities.
Despite their intimidating appearance, Namahage are not simply demons or monsters. Traditionally, they are regarded as visiting deities or supernatural beings who descend from the mountains to admonish bad behavior while bringing blessings, good health, abundant harvests, and good fortune for the coming year. Their frightening appearance serves a purpose: to encourage diligence, proper conduct, and respect for family and community.
The centuries-old Namahage tradition remains an important part of the cultural heritage of northern Japan. In 2018, the Oga no Namahage tradition was included as part of UNESCO’s Raiho-shin, ritual visits of deities in masks and costumes inscription on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
This fascinating combination of fearsome appearance, supernatural origins, ritual tradition, and benevolent purpose makes Namahage a natural addition to the Yokai: Legends of Japan Series. Like many beings within Japanese folklore, appearances can be deceptive—the terrifying visitor may ultimately arrive not to cause harm, but to protect the household and encourage a prosperous year ahead.
The obverse features Intaglio Mint’s interpretation of a Namahage, with powerful horns, glaring eyes, prominent fangs, and flowing wild hair emerging against a field of swirling Japanese-inspired clouds. The stylized NAMAHAGE inscription crowns the design.
The reverse carries the common Yokai: Legends of Japan design, featuring traditional Japanese imagery surrounding Mount Fuji and a torii gate, visually unifying each release within the series.
