1931 Panama Balboa Tribute – 1 AVDP Ounce .999 Fine Copper Round
Description:
A tribute to one of Panama’s most distinguished historic coins, faithfully recreated in one AVDP ounce of .999 fine copper.
Located at the crossroads of North and South America, Panama has long held extraordinary strategic importance. Its narrow isthmus links two continents while separating the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans—a geographic position that ultimately made the Panama Canal one of the world’s most consequential trade routes. The national motto, PRO MUNDI BENEFICIO, meaning “For the Benefit of the World,” reflects Panama’s enduring role in connecting nations and commerce.
Panama’s currency takes its name from Vasco Núñez de Balboa, the Spanish explorer who crossed the Isthmus of Panama in 1513 and became the first European to view the Pacific Ocean from the Americas. His name and likeness have remained closely associated with Panamanian identity, appearing on the nation’s coinage for generations. The original 1931 issue marked the introduction of Panama’s full one-balboa silver coin, produced to standards comparable to the contemporary United States silver dollar.
The obverse presents Balboa in an imposing armored portrait, wearing an elaborately decorated morion helmet. The restrained inscription V. N. BALBOA frames his profile, allowing the strength and sculptural character of the portrait to command the design.
The reverse features an allegorical female figure representing the Republic of Panama, posed beside the nation’s historic coat of arms. She carries a fasces as a symbol of authority and unity while the shield displays Panama’s national imagery and the motto PRO MUNDI BENEFICIO. The inscriptions REPUBLICA DE PANAMA and 1931 preserve the identity of the original coin, while the revised hallmark identifies this tribute’s modern composition of one AVDP ounce of .999 fine copper.
Struck entirely in-house in the USA, this copper tribute showcases Intaglio Mint’s commitment to traditional medallic craftsmanship, deep relief engraving, and historically faithful reproductions. Its brilliant copper finish accentuates every carefully sculpted detail—from Balboa’s ornate helmet and armor to the flowing garments and national symbolism of the reverse.
More than a tribute, this round celebrates Panama’s remarkable history, its unique place in world commerce, and one of Latin America’s most memorable classic coin designs.
