Catholic tradition places the apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe at Tepeyac, near present-day Mexico City, in December 1531. Juan Diego, an Indigenous convert, is remembered as the messenger who carried her request for a church to the bishop.

In the devotional account, roses gathered at Tepeyac were carried in Juan Diego’s tilma, or cloak. When he opened it before the bishop, the image of Mary was revealed on the fabric. The image preserved at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe remains the focus of the devotion, and her feast is celebrated on December 12.
