Indian – 1/2 Troy Oz .999 Fine Silver Round
A sweeping feathered headdress and a strong Liberty profile give our Indian fractional silver round its distinctive presence. Inspired by the portrait tradition associated with Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ ten-dollar gold coin, this modern tribute brings classic American coinage art to one-half troy ounce of .999 fine silver.
The History Behind the Portrait
Saint-Gaudens’ ten-dollar design grew from his collaboration with President Theodore Roosevelt on new American gold coinage. Introduced in 1907, it presented Liberty wearing a feathered headdress—an artistic combination Roosevelt had encouraged. The image was an allegorical Liberty, not a portrait of a particular Native American person.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art connects the head of Liberty to Saint-Gaudens’ earlier Victory figure for the Sherman Monument. That relationship reveals how the sculptor adapted ideas between public monuments and objects small enough to hold in the hand. The flowing hair, strong profile and radiating feathers give the portrait both sculptural weight and a clear outline.
Our fractional round draws on that visual heritage while using its own private-mint reverse and silver specifications. It offers a compact way to enjoy the portrait’s interplay of smooth facial surfaces and finely divided headdress details.
Obverse Design
Liberty faces left beneath a tall feathered headdress. The word “LIBERTY” crosses the headdress band, while the open field around the portrait keeps attention on the profile and the layered feathers.
Reverse Design
The Intaglio Mint emblem occupies the center, surrounded by inscriptions identifying the mint and the round’s content: “ONE HALF TROY OUNCE,” “.999 FINE SILVER” and “EST. 2010.” The reverse establishes the modern bullion identity of this privately minted tribute.
