The Stranger Behind the Bandages

Published in 1897, Wells’ The Invisible Man begins with the arrival of a mysterious, heavily wrapped stranger in an English village. His attempts to conceal himself only deepen the curiosity of those around him. Beneath the disguise is Griffin, a scientist whose discovery has made his own body invisible.

What seems at first like extraordinary power soon proves far more complicated. Griffin must cope with ordinary needs, exposure, isolation, and the difficulty of returning to normal life. Wells turns a fantastic premise into a story about ambition and the consequences of separating power from responsibility.

The character’s disguise is central to his enduring visual appeal. The coverings that hide his secret also make him recognizable: an absent face becomes a powerful presence. That paradox makes the Invisible Man a particularly fitting subject for sculptural art.
