The Story Behind The Scream

Edvard Munch (1863–1944) made emotion central to his art. His paintings and prints explored love, anxiety, illness, and mortality through imagery that could feel intensely personal yet widely recognizable.

The Scream grew from an experience Munch described in writing: a sunset walk with two friends during which the landscape seemed charged with overwhelming emotion. He recorded the scene in a diary text in 1892, before developing the famous motif in several forms. Versions dating from 1893 helped establish the image, and a lithograph followed in 1895.

There is more than one original Scream. Munch revisited the subject in paintings, drawings, and prints. Even the central figure leaves room for interpretation: is it crying out, or reacting to a cry it hears? That unresolved tension helps explain why the image continues to hold our attention.
