Gonzales Cannon & Texas Seal – Two Symbols of Texas History
A cannon, a lone star and four defiant words tell a story that Texans have carried for generations. This 1 troy ounce .999 fine silver round brings the Gonzales Cannon together with Intaglio Mint’s modified Texas seal, connecting the opening clash of the Texas Revolution with the symbols of the later state.
The Cannon at Gonzales
Mexican authorities provided Gonzales with a cannon in 1831 for the settlement’s defense. When troops were sent to retrieve it in 1835, the residents refused to surrender it. The confrontation became the Battle of Gonzales on October 2, 1835, widely remembered as the opening engagement of the Texas Revolution.
The fighting itself was a brief skirmish, but its symbolism proved enduring. A flag displaying a cannon, a star and the words “Come and Take It” turned a dispute over one piece of artillery into an unmistakable statement of resistance. Those simple elements remain the focus of this round’s reverse.
From Republic to State
The seal’s central star and encircling olive and live oak branches trace their form to the Republic of Texas design adopted in 1839. The 1845 state constitution carried those elements into the seal of the State of Texas. Olive and live oak linked the imagery of peace and strength with the identity of the new republic and, later, the state.
We have taken the liberty of adding the word “GREAT” to emphasize our admiration for this great state. That personal touch distinguishes the round’s tribute design from the official state seal.
Obverse Design
A modified depiction of the Texas State Seal displays the central lone star and surrounding branches, with the date of statehood below.
Reverse Design
The Lone Star and Gonzales Cannon appear beneath “COME AND TAKE IT.” The lower inscription reads “1 TROY OUNCE .999 FINE SILVER.”
