The Engineering Landmark in the Scene
The Golden Gate Bridge opened to pedestrians on May 27, 1937, with vehicles following the next day. Its 4,200-foot main suspension span was the longest in the world when it opened, a distinction it held until 1964. The bridge’s towers, cables and long span made it both an engineering achievement and a lasting symbol of the city.
Here, that real landmark provides the setting for a fictional visit. The straight lines of the roadway and hanging cables contrast with the rounded saucers above, while the distant skyline gives the scene depth. The design invites the viewer to imagine what might happen next without presenting the encounter as a documented event.
Obverse Design
The Golden Gate Bridge crosses the foreground, its tower and suspension cables sharply defining the view. Water lies below, with the San Francisco skyline beyond. Multiple disc-shaped craft occupy the sky at different heights and sizes, drawing attention away from the familiar landmark toward the unexpected visitors.
