The relationship between honor, loyalty and courage has a long history. In Germania, the Roman historian Tacitus describes the bonds between Germanic leaders and their followers. A chief was expected to lead through bravery and example, while his companions sought to match his courage. Tacitus also describes the lasting disgrace attached to returning from a battle in which a leader had fallen.

That account provides an ancient parallel to the sentiment expressed by the modern motto, rather than evidence that Tacitus coined its exact wording. Here, the theme is expressed through symbolic artwork: the helmet suggests the warrior, the sword evokes conflict, and the skull places mortality at the center of the composition. Decorative scrollwork adds an elaborate counterpoint to the severity of the subject.

Obverse Design

A left-facing skull wears an ornate Roman-style crested helmet. A sword pierces the helmet from above and emerges through the skull’s mouth. Small crosses and flowing ornaments frame the upper field, while “MORTE PRIMA DI DISONORE” curves around the lower border. Fine engraved details across the helmet and its sweeping crest reward a closer look.

Reverse Design

The Intaglio Mint emblem fills the center, framed by the inscriptions “TWO TROY OUNCES” and “.999 FINE SILVER.” Stars separate the weight and purity legends, giving the reverse a clear, balanced arrangement.
