Sugar Skulls – Remembrance in Silver
Three decorated skulls, roses, trailing vines, and a snake fill this bold composition with contrasting forms. Our Sugar Skulls round brings the imagery of remembrance to 2 troy ounces of .999 fine silver, giving the familiar calavera motif a substantial 39 mm setting. One skull faces forward while its companions turn to either side, creating a design that reads differently as the eye moves across it.
The Tradition Behind the Sugar Skull
Sugar skulls are closely associated with Día de los Muertos, when families remember loved ones who have died. These decorated calaveritas appear on ofrendas alongside photographs, flowers, food, and other offerings. Their ornament and sweetness place mortality within a celebration of affection and memory, rather than treating the skull solely as an image of fear.
UNESCO describes the Indigenous Mexican festivities as marking the temporary return of deceased relatives and loved ones. The celebrations take place around the end of October and beginning of November, with practices that vary among communities. The modern observance brings together Indigenous traditions and Catholic influences, making it a living cultural inheritance rather than a single uniform ritual.
Design Details
Obverse: Three sugar skulls face right, forward, and left, with roses, vines, and a snake below. The combination gives the round its distinctive character: floral forms surround the skulls while the three viewpoints keep the composition animated.
Reverse: A large Intaglio Mint logo is surrounded by a plain border bearing “TWO TROY OUNCES” above and “.999 FINE SILVER,” flanked by stars. The clear hallmark contrasts with the densely detailed obverse.
