1853 Seated Liberty Arrows & Rays – A Turning Point in Silver

Small design changes can tell a large economic story. This modern tribute to the 1853 Seated Liberty Arrows & Rays design recalls a moment when the value of silver forced American coinage to change. Containing 2 troy ounces of .999 fine silver, the round combines the seated figure of Liberty with an eagle reverse and the distinctive theme of a historic transitional issue.

Why the Arrows and Rays Appeared

In 1853, Congress reduced the authorized weights of the silver half dime, dime, quarter, and half dollar to address the changing relationship between silver value and face value. The aim was practical: lessen the incentive to remove coins from circulation for their metal.

Arrows beside the date signaled the new weight standard. The quarters and half dollars also received rays around the reverse eagle; the smaller half dimes and dimes used arrows without that eagle-and-rays design. On the historical half dollar, the weight fell from about 13.36 grams to 12.44 grams. Those figures describe the original circulating coin—the modern tribute offered here contains a full 2 troy ounces of fine silver.

Obverse: Liberty sits upon a rock, holding the Union shield and a pole topped with a liberty cap. Thirteen stars surround the figure. The seated pose and symbolic objects connect the composition with the long-running Liberty Seated tradition of nineteenth-century United States coinage.

Reverse: An eagle clutches arrows and branches, framed by “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWO TROY OUNCES.” The hallmark appears at the six o’clock position. The tribute’s weight inscription distinguishes this silver round from the denomination of the historical coin.

For a collector, the design offers more than a familiar Liberty portrait: it recalls how a change in metal value could leave a visible mark on everyday money.
