The Language of Justice
Figures of Justice appear throughout the United States Supreme Court Building, showing how strongly this artistic tradition remains connected to public life. The familiar scales represent impartial consideration—the weighing of opposing claims—while the sword signifies the authority of law. Together, these conventional symbols ask that power be guided by fair judgment.
A surprising detail is that Justice is not always blindfolded. The Supreme Court’s own courtroom imagery includes a figure without a blindfold, alongside other representations that use one. The variations remind us that an allegorical figure can express an idea in several ways. This round participates in that tradition by naming the virtue directly and giving it a central human form.
Design Details
Obverse: Lady Justice is presented beneath “JUSTICE,” flanked by five stars on each side within a decorative surround. The arrangement turns an abstract principle into the clear focal point of the round.
Reverse: An eagle with spread wings holds a flowing ribbon beneath a crown, set against a circular diamond-patterned background. The LIMITED MINTAGE™ and MINT CLUB™ legends accompany the 500-mintage inscriptions, with weight and purity hallmarks along the lower outer border. Rounded dentils complete the framing.
