2022 Niue Freya – A Goddess and Her Cat-Drawn Chariot

One of Norse mythology’s most distinctive journeys appears on the 2022 Niue Freya silver coin: the goddess traveling in a chariot drawn by cats. This one-troy-ounce .999 fine silver issue pairs the mythological scene with Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy and a two-dollar denomination. Interlaced knotwork connects the two sides within a 39 mm design.

Freya in the Norse Stories

Freya, also written Freyja, is presented in the Prose Edda as the daughter of Njord and sister of Freyr. The text links her with love, but also with the fate of warriors: she receives half of those slain in battle, while Odin receives the other half. Her domain is Fólkvangr, and her hall is called Sessrúmnir.

The same account describes her traveling in a vehicle drawn by two cats. That memorable detail is the focus of this coin. Other passages tell of her sorrow for her absent husband and tears of gold, adding longing and loss to a figure whose stories cross several parts of human experience. These are elements of Norse mythology, preserved in literary accounts, and they give the design a richer setting than a single title such as goddess of love.

Design Details

The reverse depicts Freya riding her cat-drawn chariot, with a Celtic knot pattern around the upper outer circumference. The unusual team makes the scene immediately distinctive and provides a direct connection to the traditional account.

The obverse features Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy with “ELIZABETH II,” “NIUE,” “TWO DOLLARS” and the year 2022 around it. A Celtic knot border echoes the reverse decoration. The stated worldwide mintage is 2,500, and the original certificate link below provides the accompanying issue document.
