The Four Seasons – Autumn and the Harvest
Autumn joins the Four Seasons series with a design of abundance and change. Inspired by Edoardo Gioja’s seasonal art, the round shows a maiden carrying the harvest in her dress as leaves fall around her. Struck in 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver, this 39 mm piece gives the season a human presence and a sense of movement.
From Painting to Silver
Italian artist Edoardo Gioja (1862–1937) worked in portraiture, landscape and decorative art. His Four Seasons appeared in The Studio in 1901. Italy’s ICCD preserves photographs of the seasonal paintings and drawings, providing a record of this part of his work.
A Season of Gathering
Harvest imagery has long helped artists identify autumn. In its explanation of traditional seasonal figures, the National Gallery of Victoria associates autumn with the grape harvest. The broader idea is the same here: what grew through the warmer months is now gathered and carried home.
The harvest and falling leaves create two complementary ideas within one scene. One suggests plenty; the other marks time passing. The figure holds the season’s produce close while her flowing hair and the leaves introduce movement around her. That balance makes Autumn feel both generous and fleeting, a visual transition between Summer’s ease and Winter’s need for shelter.
Design Details
The obverse depicts a maiden with flowing hair, using her dress to hold the autumn harvest. Falling leaves identify the changing season and give the surrounding space an active role in the composition. Rather than relying on a calendar inscription, the design lets the figure and natural details tell the seasonal story.
The reverse presents the large Intaglio Mint logo within a plain border, with “ONE TROY OUNCE” above and “.999 FINE SILVER” below, flanked by stars. Its consistent treatment links Autumn to the other Four Seasons rounds, making the series a study in changing poses, symbols and moods.
