From Archaeological Discovery to Screen Horror
In November 1922, Egyptian workers on the expedition led by Howard Carter uncovered Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings. The discovery brought ancient Egypt into worldwide focus. Photographer Harry Burton, working with the Metropolitan Museum’s Egyptian Expedition, helped document the tomb and its remarkable contents.
A decade later, Universal released The Mummy in 1932, starring Boris Karloff and directed by Karl Freund. Unlike the studio’s adaptations of Dracula and Frankenstein, this film used an original story developed for the screen. Its atmosphere drew on fascination with ancient Egypt while turning that interest into a supernatural tale.
The distinction matters: a cinematic mummy is a creation of horror storytelling, while the discovery and recording of an ancient tomb belong to archaeology. The round celebrates the screen tradition, where a figure from the distant past seems to return to a world that has moved on without it. Its snakes and bandaged subject give that theme an immediately recognizable visual form.
