The Story Behind the Name

Reports from Puerto Rico brought the Chupacabra widespread attention in 1995. Its name combines the Spanish chupar, meaning “to suck,” with cabra, meaning “goat.” Stories describe a mysterious predator blamed for attacks on livestock, making the goat central to both the name and this round’s composition.

The legend later became familiar in Texas, where unusual-looking animals were reported as possible Chupacabras. In a 2010 Texas Parks & Wildlife article, department mammalogist John Young explained how mange can leave coyotes or foxes nearly hairless and dramatically change their appearance. He identified examined Texas examples as familiar animals affected by disease, rather than a newly discovered species.

That contrast between reported mystery and wildlife explanation is part of the Chupacabra’s story. The round illustrates the creature of legend, giving collectors a vivid piece of modern folklore without treating sensational livestock claims as established zoological fact.

Design Details

Obverse: A detailed, high-relief Chupacabra hovers over a goat. The looming pose creates the threatening encounter suggested by the creature’s name and makes the relationship between predator and prey the focus of the design.

Reverse: The high-relief Intaglio Mint logo appears on a radial burst within a stippled border. “TWO TROY OUNCES” and “.999 FINE SILVER” identify the silver content, with the date “2023” completing the reverse.
