Buffalo Nickel Fantasy Sandwich – 1 oz Silver

A historic nickel at the heart of a modern minting experiment.

We struck two half-troy-ounce .999 fine silver planchets with an authentic full-date Buffalo nickel between them. The result is a three-piece fantasy sandwich: silver tribute designs on the outside and a genuine circulating coin transformed by the pressure at its center.

How the Sandwich Is Made

The striking process flattens the central nickel and enlarges its diameter. We use a striking pressure that allows the pieces to come apart, so the nickel inside can be seen. The two silver planchets together contain one troy ounce of .999 fine silver; the center nickel is an additional component.

Please expect marks and abrasions on both outer faces. These are disclosed features of this experimental striking process. Although the listed finish is Brilliant Uncirculated, this product is not offered as a blemish-free conventional round.

The Coinage Connection

James Earle Fraser designed the original Buffalo nickel, issued from 1913 through 1938. Its Native American portrait and American bison remain instantly recognizable. Here, those motifs on the silver faces echo the genuine nickel enclosed between them, connecting the tribute with an example of the coin that inspired it.

Design and Components

Outer obverse: A right-facing Native American portrait with “LIBERTY” near the upper-right rim and the date at lower left.

Center: An authentic full-date Buffalo nickel, flattened during striking. No particular date is specified for the center coin.

Outer reverse: An American bison beneath “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” with “ONE TROY OUNCE,” the mint mark and hallmark below.
