The Man Behind the Legend
Known as William H. Bonney and Henry McCarty, Billy the Kid became caught up in New Mexico Territory’s Lincoln County War of 1878. The conflict grew out of rival commercial interests and drew lawmen, ranchers and armed factions into a violent struggle. His association with the Regulators tied his short life to that turbulent chapter of the Southwest.
In 1881, Billy was sentenced to death for the murder of Sheriff William Brady. He escaped from custody in Lincoln after killing two deputies, then was killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett at Fort Sumner later that year. New Mexico’s archives preserve records of his criminal cases, escape, death warrant and the reward connected with Garrett—documents that ground a much-retold legend in the historical record.
Obverse: A Familiar Frontier Portrait
The obverse depicts Billy the Kid wearing his distinctive hat and neckwear, based on his famous photographic likeness. BILLY THE KID curves above the portrait. The open background keeps the focus on the young face that became so closely associated with the outlaw West.
