Two Designs in One Year
Hermon A. MacNeil’s Standing Liberty quarter debuted in 1916, and its design changed during 1917. The earlier Type I shows Liberty with an exposed breast and no stars beneath the reverse eagle. The revised Type II adds chain mail to Liberty’s torso, raises the eagle and places three stars below it. Those visible differences make 1917 an especially interesting year for collectors comparing the two types.
This tribute follows the Type II design. The protective armor, shield and olive branch create a memorable combination of readiness and peace. The date 1917 forms part of the historical imagery; this is a modern silver round inspired by the quarter, not an original circulating coin.
Obverse: Liberty with Shield and Olive Branch
Liberty stands between architectural panels, her head turned to the viewer’s right. She carries a shield in her left hand and extends an olive branch in her right, with chain mail visible across her upper body. LIBERTY arcs overhead, IN GOD WE TRUST is divided across the panels, and stars lead down toward the date at the base.
Reverse: An Eagle in Flight
An eagle sweeps to the right with its wings spread, with the three stars beneath it identifying the Type II arrangement. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM occupy the upper field, while stars frame the bird at the sides. TWO TROY OUNCES below identifies the weight of this silver tribute.
