The Story Behind the Mercury Dime

Designed by sculptor Adolph A. Weinman, the Winged Liberty dime entered circulation in 1916 and remained part of American coinage through 1945. The portrait depicts Liberty wearing a winged cap, an expression of freedom of thought. Its resemblance to Mercury, the winged messenger of Roman mythology, gave the coin the nickname that has followed it ever since.

The dime belonged to a remarkable moment in American coin design. The Standing Liberty quarter and Walking Liberty half dollar also made their debuts in 1916; Weinman designed the half dollar as well as the dime. Together, those designs brought new interpretations of Liberty to everyday pocket change.

Strength and Peace in the Design

The reverse pairs a fasces—a bundle of rods surrounding an axe—with an olive branch. The combination expresses strength and readiness alongside a desire for peace. On this tribute, the upright bundle anchors the composition while the branch curves around it, balancing the geometric forms with a natural element.

The reproduced 1916 date, “D” mint-mark detail, and “ONE DIME” inscription honor the historical design. This is a modern silver art medal, not an original 1916 dime; its precious-metal weight and purity are identified by the microprinted hallmark along the axe blade.
