Product Details

In the wake of World War II, America sought to honor one of its most beloved presidents. On April 12, 1945, President Franklin D. Roosevelt passed away after leading the United States through the Great Depression and most of World War II. Within a month of his death, on May 3, Louisiana Representative James Hobson Morrison introduced a bill for a Roosevelt dime. By May 17, Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau Jr. announced that the Mercury dime would be replaced with a new coin depicting Roosevelt.

The choice of the dime was particularly meaningful. Roosevelt had suffered from polio since 1921 and strongly supported the March of Dimes to combat the crippling disease. This ten-cent piece became a fitting tribute to a president who remained immensely popular for his wartime leadership and domestic policies. The Roosevelt dime was first released into circulation in 1946, becoming the first new coin design of the 1940s.

Despite some initial resistance from numismatic circles—with some arguing that the limited space on a dime wouldn't do justice to Roosevelt's legacy or that he hadn't earned a place alongside Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln on circulating coinage—approximately 90 percent of letters received by numismatic publications supported the change. The Roosevelt dime quickly became an accepted and beloved addition to American pocket change.

From 1946 to 1964, these dimes were struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, creating what collectors now prize as "junk silver" or "constitutional silver" coins. The term "junk" is misleading—these are valuable pieces of American history with intrinsic silver content. After 1964, rising silver prices forced the U.S. Mint to change the composition to copper-nickel clad, making these original 90% silver Roosevelt dimes even more desirable to both collectors and precious metals investors.

Today, these circulated silver Roosevelt dimes represent a tangible connection to post-war America. Each coin potentially passed through countless hands during a transformative period in American history—the economic boom of the 1950s, the dawn of the Space Age, and the cultural revolutions of the early 1960s. Owning these pieces means holding genuine artifacts from a defining era in American prosperity.

Design Features

The obverse (front) of the Roosevelt dime features a left-facing profile portrait of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The design expertly captures Roosevelt's distinctive features—his confident expression and characteristic pince-nez glasses. Around the rim, the word "LIBERTY" appears to the left of Roosevelt's portrait, while the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is positioned to the right. The year of minting is displayed at the bottom of the obverse.

The reverse (back) design showcases a torch in the center, symbolizing liberty, flanked by an olive branch on the left representing peace, and an oak branch on the right signifying strength and independence. The motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (Out of Many, One) arches above the design, while the denomination "ONE DIME" and the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" complete the reverse composition. This balanced arrangement of American symbols creates a timeless design that has remained largely unchanged since its introduction in 1946.

Investment Appeal

These 90% silver Roosevelt dimes offer exceptional value for both collectors and investors. With approximately 0.07234 troy ounces of pure silver per coin, this $1 face value lot contains 0.715 troy ounces of silver, making it a compact and divisible form of precious metal ownership. Silver has historically preserved its value and acted as a hedge against inflation, providing stability during economic uncertainty.

The beauty of 90% silver Roosevelt dimes lies in their remarkable liquidity. These coins are instantly recognizable throughout the numismatic and precious metals markets, allowing for easy buying and selling when needed. Their status as genuine U.S. currency with both historical significance and intrinsic metal value creates a dual appeal that purely bullion products cannot match.

As circulated examples from America's silver coinage era, these dimes represent an affordable entry point into precious metals investing while simultaneously offering the charm of historical artifacts. Their modest premium over spot price compared to modern silver products makes them an efficient way to accumulate physical silver while owning a piece of American numismatic heritage. Whether you're diversifying your investment portfolio or expanding your collection, these Roosevelt dimes provide tangible assets with proven staying power.
